What would you do if your child had cancer and no health insurance

What would you do if your child had cancer and no health insurance?
There are 40 million Americans without health care !

what if you woke up late and left for work without eating breakfast? then you would be one of the millions who are starving in america. its 40mill depending on who and how they do the counting.
2 :
In most states, Medicaid would cover that. And, it is not 40 million Americans, it is about 15 million... and they are not without health care, they are without insurance.
3 :
Well before Bush and Obama started taxing the Hell out of everybody and sinking the economy people were donating to St. Judes and Shriners hospitals. NOW THEY CAN'T AFFORD TO.
4 :
The majority of Americans who don't have health insurance by choice, they can afford it but don't want to buy it.
5 :
I'd be a pretty crappy dad for not making sure my kid was taken care of. That said, most children are covered by some sort of state program regardless of their parents' neglect. Isn't this why you folks pushed for teh SCHIP stuff? And the post above me had it: St. Jude and Shriners Hospitals.
6 :
Take them to Shriner's hospital, but I work for a living so I handle my responsibilities. You say: "There are 40 million Americans without health care !" First of all, everyone has healthcare, people connot be denied care do to ability to pay Secondly, What the hell does that have to do with your question?
7 :
Use programs that are currently in place, and know that my child is getting far better care, since under Obamacare that child with cancer would be considered an "unproductive" member of society, and put on the back burner for "the good of all." Patients' Choice Act - the only plan that is a measure of true reform, would empower the uninsured to purchase the plan of their choice, by redirecting subsidies, while protecting current plans & quality care. You empower the uninsured, not enslave everyone.
8 :
Have you ever heard of St. Jude's? Or the Shriner's? Hospitals must give care to anyone in need; it's the law. Many hospitals have payment plans and many often waive fees, especially for children with cancer. If you want to play the sympathy card, this is the wrong country. NOW, I suggest you check out government run institutes. The VA, and hospitals located on Indian Reservations for instance. It will make you cry.
9 :
Amazingly enough, there are charitable organizations you can reach out to. For now... When it's mandated, no one will be able to afford the donations to keep it going. So what will happen when you find out you or your child have cancer and the treatment will not be approved? Just saying....
10 :
Moving to a country where there is social medicine is always an option. It works in Canada, Italy, England and France! Explain that to your mass population and they'll tell that it's a lie. Well for lying countries we get pretty good damn health care....cancer, heart surgery, emergency surgery. Is it perfect...no and are there delays in emergency rooms...yes! People that go to hospitals for a broken nail and a common cold wait at the end of the line!
11 :
I would go to Shriners Hospital. Or apply for medicaid. Your number is wrong, by the way: -10 million or so of that number are not Americans. -8.3 million uninsured people who make between $50,000 and $74,999 per year and 8.74 million who make more than $75,000 a year could buy insurance if they wanted to. -45 percent of uninsured people will be uninsured for less than four months according to the Congressional Budget Office -one prominent study places the total for the long-term uninsured as low as 8.2 million The problem can be solved without dismantling our whole system and installing single payer. Free clinics, tort reform, allowing insurance to be bought across state lines, expand Medicaid and have low income families pay a percentage according to their income, stop spending stimulus money on ridiculous projects, don't loan money to Brazil, don't bail out failed companies, etc. etc.
12 :
There is medicade, there are shriner's hospitals, ronald mcdonald houses and many other charities to help out if you care enough about your child you can do it.My children have always had excellent health care because my wife and I made sure we had excellent insurance.Sometimes one of us took out a lower paying job that had better benefits. We sometimes had to make budget cuts, drive older cars etc,. until we found something better but we worked very hard and made it work.I am all for giving tempory help to those that need it but I do not support those that wont try to do better.

Under the new health insurance plan, does a child have to live in the same house hold

Under the new health insurance plan, does a child have to live in the same house hold?
I think a child can be covered until age 26, regardless of whether they are in school. Do you also know if they are not currently covered (under old requirements), can they be covered once the new requirements go into place?

The Parent-Child Relationship Controls A plan may not condition “child coverage on any factors other than (1) the parent-child relationship between the child and a plan participant, and (2) the requirement that the child be under the age of 26. In other words, a plan will NOT satisfy the Coverage Requirement if it: Charges different premiums or cost sharing on, or makes different coverage options available to, different age groups of age 26-and-under children; Requires that the age 26-and-under children show residency, financial dependency, student status, or unemployment status in order to obtain coverage; Denies a 26-and-under child coverage because he or she is eligible for another employer’s coverage (although “grandfathered plans have the right to do this for plan years beginning before January 1, 2014); or Denies a 26-and-under child coverage because he or she is married (however, spouses of the covered child, or children of the covered child, need not be covered).
2 :
They still have to be a dependent, which is usually defined as living in the parent's household, and a dependent on the income tax return. Yes, they could get added on - if the parent wants to do it - during the next open enrollment, AFTER Sept. 23rd.

Is it considered child abuse to refuse to let your child get help for mental health issues

Is it considered child abuse to refuse to let your child get help for mental health issues?
for whatever reason, like maybe the parents dont believe in it, despite the fact the Child is suffering a very troubling disorder. I think many people are still old school thinking of Psychology as junk science, and one needs to just snap out of it.
Parenting - 12 Answers

1 :
You do realize (or maybe you are illiterate as you come across) that there is science and quantitative support for the almost all of the psychological disorders that are diagnosed correct? It is not a "junk science" and those that think it is are morons and probably never even took a collegiate level course in science, especially those in BioChemistry related fields. I don't know if it is child abuse but it should be. From what I see, the parents have mental illness as well so maybe you can use that as a defense?
2 :
i believe it is ILLEGAL
3 :
It is legally child abuse to withhold any kind of medical care from a child, especially one in dire need of it. I know that for a fact.
4 :
not if they got blood on your shovel
5 :
im pretty sure its illegal but for fun go look at howdy cowboy's shovel question after reading his comment
6 :
If the child's mental health issues are not being treated properly and he/she is not in the right environment to learn and develop the way they need to, The government can come and take away your child. By law you have to give your child the proper medical care and if they arent getting it and are suffering from it, then they can be taken away. Granted it depend on what condition and the severity of the condition what matters are taken, but I suggest you get them the help they need. With proper treatment and help, many children grow up to be independent and able to work and live normal lives(granted it depends on the condition) but it just cruel to not give your child what it needs to develop and learn to their fullest capabilities. And if you think this is a bunch of crap, you're horribly horribly wrong. There is years of science to back up these conditions and develop treatments which can help your child live its life.
7 :
No. I dont think that that is child abuse.
8 :
As long as the disorder is not ADHD or ADD, you can be done for necgelt.
9 :
it might not be illegal but it is definitely a form of child abuse/neglect.
10 :
I think it would depend on two things. Firstly what specific mental issues are we talking about? A few of them don't require medication or treatment simply but day to day management. Like it's been said most mental disorders are scientifically proven and medically quantifiable, but a few are not. So if a parent believes their child was over-diagnosed, I think in some cases they can defend their case. For example there's a huge push at the moment to diagnose every child who seems too lively with something. And I'm not saying I don't believe some of them do have something, but some of them have nothing but high energy levels and medicating them just seems wrong. Finally the second thing is whether they refuse all help or if they have their own idea of what should be done. For example some parents with a kid that has ADD may not want the kid to be medicated and left in a sedated state all the time. They may decide instead to just get him more exercise and keep him on a healthy diet with less sugar or whatever. Or maybe get him some relaxation therapy. Or whatever they want to do. Since the disorder is not life threatening and they are actually doing something, I doubt it would be considered abuse. Now if a teenager has severe schyzophrenia for example and absolutely needs to be medicated or he becomes violent, uncontrollable and/or suicidal, then yes I believe the parents are under obligation to follow the doctor's advice. In other words, it's pretty much the same for a kid with a physical illness. A kid with hay fever whose parents decide to get him some new age therapy will not be taken away. Parents who decide a child who has a cold should stay in bed but doesn't need medication are not abusers. Parents who refuse life-saving transplant or blood transfusion or life-saving medical treatment to a child who has cancer, or is losing all of his blood after a car accident or whatever are definitely criminally neglectful of that child (yes even if it's a matter of religious belief). PS: hunter d, actually I am not sure if they do that in the US, but in France, when religious beliefs conflict with a child's welfare, yes they take the child away. It happened before that Jeovah's Witnesses refused life-saving blood transfusions or organ transplants for their children. CPS stepped in and had the transfusions and transplants court-ordered. Strangely I never heard of any Jeovah's Witnesses taking France to the human rights court afterwards for not allowing them freedom of religion. Maybe because in the end they're just glad their kids are alive?
11 :
People refuse medical treatment on the basis of their Religious beliefs all the time! Should Jehovah's Witnesses be locked up because they refuse to receive blood transfusions? Should parents be taken in when they refuse to get their children vaccinated? Should Amish parents be locked up when they refuse to allow their children to be treated in a hospital? When are other people going to "butt out" of people's parenting & focus on their own? Parents have the rights to make any decisions they deem fit for their own children! And if that includes not seeking help for a "very troubling disorder" then that is their choice! U are not there 24/7 & U do not know what is REALLY being done for this child! Maybe his/her pediatrician has not recommended that they see a psychologist. Maybe they are taking medication that is not working. Maybe it goes against their parents religious beliefs. U simply don't know!
12 :
Yes it is, the child needs the help and the parents are refusing to get the child help he/she needs.

Can our child receive VA health benefits

Can our child receive VA health benefits?
My wife and I both have served in the armed forces and were honorably discharged. Does the VA provide health benefits to children of veterans who are not retirees?
Military - 4 Answers

1 :
i believe so but to be sure, go to va.gov and be sure
2 :
No. VA benefits are for the veteran and in some cases, the surviving spouse.
3 :
no. only if one or both of you were killed in action.
4 :
One of you does not have to be killed in action dispite what one poster said. One of you has to be killed on active duty for a surviving spouse or child to recieve health benefits if you are not retired.

Serious question about parents and the health of their child

Serious question about parents and the health of their child.?
Where do you think the line should be drawn for parents being allowed to make health choices for their children? At what age, and under what circumstances should the government be allowed to step in? At what age, and under what circumstances should the a doctor be allowed to step in? At what age should the child be able to decide for themselves? Should medical or government interventions be allowed if the person is legally an adult? Many parents choose to leave it in god/nature's hands and just pray/wait. Certain religions or even strong non-religious beliefs dissuade parents from allowing their children to get blood transfusions, inoculations, and/or certain medicines and procedures. Many medicines and especially inoculations come from animal sources requiring animal experimentation at the least, and often the death or use of an animal. Often there is a justifiable fear of risk from the treatment itself, and sometimes there is not. Personally, I think that life itself is a risk, and that choices and variations sometimes pay off, and often do not. Parents should be given the choice to receive AND refuse treatment for their children, and we will all learn from the outcome.

1 :
In most cases, children ARE allowed to make decisions regarding their own health from about age 14 on. Provided that the medical professional has deemed the child competent enough to do so. This is why girls under the age of consent are able to get birth control without parental consent, get treatment for sexually transmitted diseases without parental consent and seek obstetrical care without parental consent.
2 :
When neglect comes into play. It is a parents duty to provide there child with healthcare etc. And if a parent fails to do this a number of occasions then someone has to step in. I never leave anything in goods hands or wait something out. If my son is ill to give me concerns over it I'll be the first one in line at the doctors. If I was to refuse treatment for my son in regards to his medical issues I know for a fact a court order would be obtain. So I think that one rule for all should be applied not just particular circumstances.

Why would a child getting measles trigger a county-wide health warning

Why would a child getting measles trigger a county-wide health warning?
I just saw that my county has issued a health warning because a school-age child has come down with measles. They are urging everyone who isn't vaccinated or immune to get vaccinated. Why? When I was a kid, everybody got measles. It wasn't fun and it wasn't pretty, but you got over it. As far as I know, it's not a killer disease. Why would measles trigger this kind of panic? Has anyone else heard of anything like this before? Just curious ...
Other - Diseases - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
because measles can be very hard on people. It is very contageious you wouldnt want EVERY child in the county to have it at the same time. its one of those things that we have the cure fore before it starts, so sace your self the pain and get imunized.
2 :
Because it's a highly contagious disease.
3 :
I think it's because ALL children are supposed to have had measels shots before they start school, so there should be NO cases of measels anywhere. Anyone who somehow missed the shots and hasn't had the disease could get it. I don't know why they think it's so dangerous, but I went blind temporarily when I had them. It wasn't a good disease to have.
4 :
May I ask where you are from? I know that in the US, a child is required by LAW to receive the MMR (Measels, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine. Their are parents who chose to sign a waiver to not have their child(ren) receive the vaccine, however there has to be a ligitament reason (ie; religious reasons, etc) not just that dont want them to get it. Measels is a very contagious, and deadly disease. The thing about it is, that it is 100% preventable, as long as people are vaccinated for it. The panic lays because it is such a contagious disease that once one person gets it, then thousands and millions of people get it. I do not personally understand why everyone is not vaccinated from this, sense it saves millions of lives each year. Please "google" or "yahoo" this disease to see what the complications/side effects are from this disease. Then you will understand why there is such a panic about it. In the US they are even asking Adults to get a "Booster" vaccine for this disease- as to help further prevent the spread and contaimination of it. I hope this doesnt scare you too much, but it really is a scary disease. Best of luck in your research.

Can a woman's emotional state effect the health of a child she is pregnant with

Can a woman's emotional state effect the health of a child she is pregnant with?
Biology is a weak point of mine. I know some biologically produced chemicals can effect mood. For example, dopamine has a direct correlation with happiness. I am curious though if mood may effect biochemistry in some way as much as the other way around. My girlfriend is due to deliver soon, and we have gone through some rather difficult times in the last few months. The specifics should not be necessary since I am looking for a general answer, but are there any risks our daughter may face if her mother is suffering emotionally? Not a wide variety of answers to choose from here. Either I pick a sourceless answer that assumes my daughter will be a lesbian, or a sourceless answer that contradicts that... I really do not care either way, but sources should always be appreciated with such strange answers.

I'm in a psychology class at Cal Poly and I recently learned that extreme stress in the 2nd trimester is believed to be a cause of homosexuality in a child. I'm sure there are other risks that are involved because the biochemistry in the mothers brain directly effects the child in some cases.
2 :
There isn't that I have heard of. Many, many women have gone through great suffering during pregnancy and still given birth to healthy babies, while many other women have had ideal times of it and had sickly children. There is really no proof one way or the other; it's all theories since it can't be systematically tested without serious ethical violations. The best you can do is hope that your baby will come out fine. I bet s/he will. =)
3 :
Wow, ok. Honestly yes it is BELIEVED or theorized that it can affect your baby. But more in a way that they would be more prone to stress or more withdrawn at somethings. Ive NEVER heard not once that your emotional state can cause homosexuality. Honestly I think thats ridiculous.
4 :
He asked if there were any risks his daughter may face... Alex- 'I recently learned that extreme stress in the 2nd trimester is believed to be a cause of homosexuality in a child.' I wouldnt call homosexuality a risk.. its not dangerous or a disease! Im sure he'd be happy with a homosexual child as long as she was perfectly healthy!
