Can a step parents add a child on his health insurance

Can a step parents add a child on his health insurance?
We live in california, and i have heard that if they investigate and there is a claim and they look into it, because he has no legal coustody, then there is a possibility they would not cover the claim?? Please help, and if you reference from a website, if you could include the url that would be great.

i think its up to the owner of the policy to decide. They pay the premium and if he is really your step-dad (as in, he's married to your mum, not just dating her) it should be fine. My dad has his step-kids on his health insurance...

Hi there, I carried my step-son on my insurance for 8 years...it was in Texas and there was never a problem because his father was mandated in his divorce to pay for medical insurance for the son.

Generally stepchildren are treated the same as biological children for insurance purposes. But check your policy.
