Increasing cigarette tax to fund child health care

Increasing cigarette tax to fund child health care?
President Obama just signed a bill to increase cigarette tax to fund child health care, the first step towards universal health care. Is this fair to those smokers who do not have children, never plan to have them? And why should smokers shoulder the entire burden? If somebody can't afford health care for their kids, STOP HAVING KIDS! agree? disagree? why?

President Obama is a socialist. of course he is going to raise taxes. I don't agree with his policy. On the other hand a lot of smokers are not very thoughtful. Why should I have to have my fresh air spoilt by their smelly and toxic cigarette smoke?

Hey, I am glad they keep taxing. I have family members that continue to smoke and therefore I don't care.

The bill is stupid. There is no way the current number of smokers in the country could fund this bill. And the more they raise cigarette taxes, the more smokers will give up their habit. So how does that make sense to anyone with a brain? Does that mean Obama wants people to START smoking in order to fund it? Or is it... as is more likely the case... his way to slip the bill in, because after all who doesn't want to slam cigarette smokers more. But once the bill is passed and obviously not getting the funds it needs, then they can start taxing the rest of us even more. Because have you EVER known the government to stop funding their pet causes once they get a bill passed? No, they just raise taxes.

A clear case of the majority tyrannizing the minority....I guess smokers need a civil rights leader on a par with MLK to get our rights legalized and stop oppression.

Chances are that the revenue will be diverted, not all will go where it is supposed to go. In the UK, we have the same fiasco with our car tax, it was supposed to go towards roads etc. All it did was fill the coffers of the government without much visible effects on the roads

Its funny. My husband and I did the math, and we found that in order for this to work, we need 2 million more smokers. So forget what the Surgeon General says. Get to smoking and support your local children's health care fund. PS Seriously, I totally agree with you.
