How do you mean? Imagination as in imaginary friend? Using their imagination to write stories in school? Playing pretend games with friends? Define child? In young children an imagination is a good thing and can be used daily as long as they can distinguish the difference between the real world and that which is in their minds. Older children should usually graduate from pretend games and elementary school at the same time, excessive imaginary games and friends can turn into compulsive lying and can be a sign of weakness and insecurity, they can also use it to pretend problems that do exist in their lives aren't there. Make your question a bit more specific.

They could get dissociative identity disorder if they practice imagining themselves as different people a little too much.

First off, dissociative identity disorder is very rare - if you consider it to be a disorder, which is actually debated in the literature - and isn't exactly caused by using your imagination. It's more or less creating different identities in order to cope with trauma.. Besides this, imagination is a wonderful concept, especially for only children. As far as I am concerned, it doesn't have any effect on a child's emotional health. I don't know how you come to the conclusion that the two are inter-related. If you want to explain more, I might have a better answer.
